REPORT 14th September 2022

The first day of activities of the Erasmus+ project ˝True Colors˝ started with the programme of welcome which also had musical content. The musical part of the programme included the students of General Secondary School “Matija Mesić” and led by Mr Martić and Ms Stičinski singing songs to welcome the guests. Ms Nemet-Kosijer, Ms Mormando and Ms Jakovljević talked briefly about the project during their speeches. Students from all participating schools (from Romania, North Macedonia, Turkey, Stigliano and Bernalda-Ferrandina from Italy) briefly introduced themselves. The programme was hosted by Luka Štefanek.

The lecture “Is empathy a chemical reaction?” given by psychiatrist Bernarda Veseličić started with a digital questionnaire TEQ (used for self-checking one’s own level of empathy). The main basis of the initial statement claims that neurons and neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and others greatly affect our empathy. After a break there was a workshop related to the lecture through which the students analysed videos, answered questions and revised their knowledge of empathy. Croatian student Mila Berišić presented a exhibition "Is empathy a chemical reaction?".

Slavonski Brod tour

The tour around the town started after the visit to County office. The guide was Mr Tihomir Katušić the teacher of History and Art. The tour started at the central square. Mr Katušić first talked about the city in general, said some interesting facts about it and talked about Franjo Tuđman, the first Croatian president, whose statue is there. The tour continued to the tiles made in honor of some important sportspeople from Slavonski Brod. A short explanation followed about the University of Mechanical Engineering and the model of the city. The short walk on the city promenade followed along with the showing of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić family house and statues of characters from her novels. The next station was the Brod Fortress, where we got some guidance and information,  then the tour continued to the Ružić Gallery with which foreign students were especially amazed, and according to Nehir Kayis: “The best part of the city for me was the Gallery. It was beautiful.”

REPORT 15th September 2022

Theme for the second day was STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). At the beginning students from our school Mihael Lovrić, Dominik Lovrić and Nikolina Žderić made a little quiz that contained five questions about STEM. The percentage of the quiz solved was 40%. After that, students from all the countries had to make a common poster and write S-T-E-M on it in their own language. The next activity was a short presentation of competitions in our school, such as informatics, physics, astronomy and GLOBE program.

After a short break, dr. sc. Dražan Kozak held a presentation about our Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Slavonski Brod and 3D printing. He said that the studies are not easy at all, but it is worth it. He talked about 3D printing which was very interesting to our guests. He mentioned 3D printed bridge in Amsterdam. The bridge is made of stainless steel that is much harder material to print than plastic. With 3D printer you can print whatever you want. People use 3D printer for aerodynamic mechanism, medicine, different kind of tools, jewellery and so on. In the end he said that 3D printing is not a process which only glues things together but it is much more complex than people think.

REPORT 16th September 2022

Short story workshop

One of the workshops was held by our teacher Biljana Mikić and involved reading short story or an excert form a book and write, draw, paint or in any other manner create there own ending. One of the tasks the students worked on was changing the negative events, words or feelings from the story into the positive ones. One group of students decided to express there empathy through a drawing, another through a poster and last group decided to make a  cartoon. Whatever the form of expression was, all the works that students produced had a common topic of empathy. Each student contributed to this common goal in their personal way.

Peter and Paul – Ukranian refugees

Peter and Paul are twin brothers from Ukraine who were kind enough to speak with us via a Zoom call about their experience. They left Ukraine on short notice in February 2022. They were confused because they didn't know the exact situation in their country at the time. They only knew they left because of the explosions. After fleeing Ukraine they first went to Poland for two months and then to Croatia. They felt sad and afraid during that time. After settling in Croatia they said that Slavonski Brod was hospitable with kind and welcoming people. The things they miss the most are their friends form school and basketball practices. Their final message was that the most important thing to feel safe is to have kind people around you.

News story

Today we participated in workshop which was held by history teacher Jelena Jakovljević. The name of the workshop was  „Us as refugees, us about refugees“ and students did a research on the role of the media in forming public opinion about migration. Firstly we asked prof. Jakovljević what the main goal of this workshop was and what side effects of refugees and migrations were. She replied that the main goal of the workshop was to raise awareness of the situation in which we can all find ourselves, so we should always be understanding. The teacher and students tried to connect examples from history with today's current problems. The most interesting part to students was the information that Croatia is an example of country of migration because there are more of the Croatian people outside the borders of the country than inside.

We asked a few participants what they like here and what do they find interesting in Slavonski Brod. First we spoke with the Romanian girl named Julia Prilog about our city. Julia considers the city center to be the most beautiful part of it, she also considers Croatian people to be very kind and communicative. She wanted to point out that she liked the workshop because she could hear different opinions there and see the migration from the other perspective. Another student who shared her opinion was the girl from Italy named Lucia Colangelo. In her opinion, the most interesting thing about our city is that Sava river seperates it from another country called Bosnia and Herzegovina. She also finds our one-flatted houses very interesting and she really likes traditional croatian food. Finally we can proudly say that most of foreign participants fell in love with our city and culture.

REPORT 17th September 2022

On Saturday we went to Zagreb. We visited centar of the city, Cathedral, St. Marko square, Uspinjača, main square, Dolac and after the lunch we visited Museum of Contemporary art. We visited appropriate exhibitions that also touch on our topic, empathy-

REPORT 18th September 2022

On the last day of mobility in Croatia, after the activities with Plavi Cvijet Organization, a game “Empathy Hunt” followed. The game was created by Ms Biljana Mikić with the help of students from 3. G and 3. H. The participants had to follow clues which led them through the whole school in order to come to the treasure. The winners got candies.

After the game, activities continued in playful spirit. Ms Marina Gojković held a crash course in traditional Croatian dances. Viktoria Ostojčić and Borna Pernar wore a traditional Croatian robe while Šimun Perković played a traditional Croatian instrument bisernica. Everyone danced and had so much fun.

The day ended with a ceremonial dinner for all participants. The dinner was served in Art hotel. After the dinner, the students participated in a pub quiz done by Mihael and Dominik Lovrić. At the evening’s end, tears, laughter and hugs were exchanged and everyone said that they were very grateful to come, meet new people and Croatian culture.
